Bought this sander on Facebook Marketplace. Nice little American gem from the golden age of manufacturing. I had been looking at other vintage sanders — different configurations and from different manufacturers. I appreciated the simple, robust design and versatility of the Model 103.22500. Solid cast iron and built to last. Original owner had an undersized 1/3hp, 1725rpm motor attached. Rotation was incorrect and it appeared to have belt tracking issues. It had been mounted to a homemade wooden stand. I was extremely fortunate to find the correct Craftsman stand (catalog no. 99A02204L) from a local collector—and got it for a reasonable price. I’m assuming from the motor mount style, that the stand is from the late 50’s/early 60’s. I attached four heavy duty swivel castors in the threaded base. A recently refurbished 3/4hp, 3450rpm Sears Craftsman model 115.7167 motor from 1950 is its new power plant. I assembled it to confirm that everything was functioning properly. Machine now operates at correct rpm’s without any vibration or alignment issues. At roughly 135 pounds total weight, it remains rock solid when turned on. I will completely disassemble and paint it this fall. I’m partial to the OEM “power bronze” paint that it came with from the factory. I will be using Rust-oleum metallic champagne bronze (313142). I test sprayed this shade on an old piece of casting. Almost identical considering its unique shade and sheen. Will update this listing when it is completely done.

The way I bought it. Recycled kitchen countertop for a stand.

Current configuration—assembled and operational, but not yet refurbished. A fresh coat of paint is in its future. Has the potential to be around for another 70 years

Image of the sander and base from a vintage Craftsman ad. I intend to fabricate a similar belt guard for my machine.
