This is a Double A Products (AA Products) 8-pound London pattern small anvil. These were used by Jewelers, Tin Smiths, Silver Smiths, Gun Smiths and also in junior/senior school shops jewelry classes. Double A Products were out on Ann Arbor (hence AA) Michigan and also had operations in Manchester Michigan. AA Products founded in 1934 was acquired in 1957 by the Brown & Sharp Manufacturing Company (see the History tab for Double A here in the section).
1937 Catalog Page -3- information for the: 5 - Eight-Pound Anvil
"This item is of cast-iron construction and has a chilled face of 1/8" deep. The chilled face gives face strength and rigidity, and makes it resistant to shock and blows, precluding breakage during ordinary use. The anvils overall dimension are 9" x 2 1/8" x 4". Shipping weight, 8 lb."
There is a "5 stamped in the side of this anvil which is for item 5 in the Double A Product catalog publication. (See picture below)
This information above was pointed out to me by fellow OWM'er and this sites administrator Brian Kachadurian who also found and posted all the Double A Products pages currently uploaded on this website.
Anvils top was surfaced slightly on a 6" wide blue zirconia 80 grit belt sander flat. The anvil horn was flap disk ground to remove factory imperfections, then smoothed out with 3-M Roloc disks and finished then on an 8" fiber wheel. Old original paint was hand sanded down, this paint was not the normal red AA color seen on their other products but was more of a dark red maroon toned color (see as received picture color) that I matched up close as possible to this darker factory red color. I purchased two new AA Products side reproduction decals off ebay.
Note: this anvils top surface is super hard (R55-60 approx.) and when I was rolling the side edges and Swiss Pattern metal file was just skating off it not cutting much at all. I had to use a 400 grit diamond stone to roll/relieve this anvils side edges.
