This saw was listed in the auction bill for a state surplus sale. I had never heard of C.H & E. Manufacturing so I originally assumed it they were quoting a dealers tag. I did some poking around the night before the sale and it turned out there was indeed a manufacturer of that name. From the scant information on the mothership it appears they made combination woodworkers much like the Crescent, Parks and Sidney offerings. I did some more internet searching and it appears they also sold these rigs powered by a small gas engine, as a handful of the engines turned up.

On sale day I was surprised to find a machine as modern looking as this. From the couple of advertisements with the manufacturer's listing I was expecting to see an unguarded C-frame type saw. Other than the galvinized sheet riveted together for a belt guard and the complete lack of tires on the wheels the saw appears to be pretty much as it left the factory. It has ball bearings throughout and there is a dust port hole on the rear of the bottom casting.

I'm not sure about this machine's lineage. I have the feeling it was probably sold as a stand alone machine. The main body is cast iron that sits on a riser that is a weldment of plate. The motor mount is an angle iron affair that appears much more nicely made than the average jimmy rig. Also I'd be surprised if the band saw would have received its own serial number and tag if it had been part of a combination woodworker.

As purchased the saw has a nice 3/4hp single phase R-I B-Line Brown and Brockmeyer motor.
