American #1530 Knife Balancing Scale, circa 1910. 9/14/07.

Here is another vintage machinery support item, from my collection. It shows up in most of the American and Yates American dirty paper. The badge, and/or decal, is long gone, but there is no doubt about match to the ones shown in the catalogs. This came from the 1910 carpenter shop at the Pioneer Sugar Mill on the west side of Maui. It probably came with the planer matcher that I used to own, you can see that little ole machine here;

Thick knives were balanced for end to end balance on top of the beam, using a little stop and some weights; also long gone on this example. Knives were balanced with each other using the pans at each end. Cylinder bolts were also balanced in this manner.
This one desperately needs a bubble bath. The Pioneer Mill shop had a big flood in 1996 and I think this example must have been submerged in that event.
