Machine Information
Serial Number: 142886
Machine Type: Band Saw
Machine Description: Lightning 311 Angling Band Ship Saw 48"
Owner: Stephen Webster
Manufacture Date: unknown
Notes: Owner states: "I removed this saw from its installation at the BumbleBee Shipyard in Astoria, Oregon. The yard and its inventory were liquidated by auction in 1981. Anecdotal information indicates that this machine was placed at this yard by the Bureau of Ships circa WW1. Though I have not submitted photos at this time, I can tell you that the machine is 99% complete, when compared to the catalog images available at the OWWM site. I have, in association with it, four slewing roller bearers. I can say with total assurance, that when erecting a sawn frame vessel, there is no tool so efficient or well engineered as this unit. The sawyer, with assistants to feed the stock, can stand at the left side of the saw table, engage power to the tilting mechanism, and produce floors, futtocks, top timbers, all with changing bevels. The flat belt power transmission to this mechanism allows the sawyer to stall it relative to the progress through a cant."
