Manufacture Date: 1927-33?
Notes: Regarding the Manufacturer Date of this machine, the owner reported: "So I had some time to kill today, so I did a little research on the jointer. Best I can figure is its born-on-date somewhere around the late 20s to early 30s. Looking through the catalogs on the .com side has narrowed it down to what I believe is a post-1926 to a pre-1933 age bracket. Prior to 1929, catalogs 110 and 114, only list a two knife cutterhead. In 1929, catalog 130, for the first time lists a three knife cutterhead. **Catalog 140, with an estimated publish date of around 1933, (I took the catalog numbers and dived them by the years they spanned and extrapolated that forward) shows that the 502 seems to have been beefed up a bit with "heavily ribbed" tables and fences as well as dovetailed ways and an overall table length of 60-inches. Catalog 140 also lists the 502 as having a scale on the fence for indicating the degree of tilt and thickness of finished stock which is also the first appearance of these features. Prior to Catalog 140 the ways were dovetailed (just not marketed as such) and the table length was 55-inches. (edit) So, considering I have a three knife cutterhead, my tables are 55" long and not ribbed, and I have no scale on the fence for either tilt or thckness; I'm putting the machine in the aforementioned age bracket of post-1926 to pre-1933. The total weight with the cast legs is actually 675lbs (shipping weight domestic) per catalog 140. " ** The thing is after reading this catalog some more there is a note referencing the war (II) so I think catalog 140 may be closer to a '45 - '46 date. But, in any case, that's how I got to the date range. R. John Klimut
