Patent Number Date Title Name City Description
3,522,871 May. 10, 1973 Lathe Harold William Clisby , Australia The patent covers a method of building smaller lathes that provides the required accuracy but is simpler and less expensive to build. The main innovation is a bed extruded from, e.g., nickel silver (an alloy of nickel and copper). The headstock and tailstock may also be extruded. The choice of extrusion material is claimed to provide the required accuracy. "The inverted dovetailed cross-slide and ways are also extruded material. If the extruded material is manganese bronze, it may, if so desired, be plated with chromium to produce a hard scuff resisting surface; if it is an extruded aluminum alloy, its surface may be deep anodised to hard it, and subsequently polished (this being desirable because of the abrasive properties of aluminum alloy)." Besides the use of extrusions, another cost-cutting improvement is a planetary gearing system.
