The basic innovation is to use a pair of steel rods to guide the movable vise jaw, reducing wear and friction. This has proved to be the best solution to a long-standing problem and these steel rods are found on virtually every wood vise made today. This patent was improved in patent 613,535.

Seen on a W. C. Toles Co. no. 60 vise. A 1906 Oliver Machinery Co. catalog listed this vise, for $7.50. The no. 50 was a 4.5 inch vise with maple jaws, weighing 37 lbs. The no. 55 also include a one-inch square brass bench stop in the back jaw. The no. 60 had the bench stop in the front jaw. The No. 65 had stops in both jaws.
784,050 Mar. 07, 1905 School-desk James W. Johnston Chicago, IL Wilford C. Toles was a witness on this patent, and he was the owner of W. C. Toles Co., which is best remembered for their woodworking vises, and in their earlier years they made manual-training furniture for schools, including benches and desks. Toles subsequently patented a school desk design of his own: see patent 827,830.
