In 1853 Henry B. Smith and his brother, Edwin Smith, established H. B. Smith & Co., makers of plumbing and heating supplies, including boilers. They also manufactured plumbers' vises: 1865 and 1882 ads mention that they were Manufacturers of Smith's Combination Pipe Vise (Dart's Patent). By the time of the 1882 ad the company name had changed to H. B. Smith Co. At some point the business incorporated as H. B. Smith Co., Inc.

Thee company is still in business as of 2019, manufacturing residential and industrial boilers as a division of Mestek, Inc.
