Key to Links for Patent Information

USPTO = U.S. Patent Office . Images of the actual patent can be viewed on the U.S. Patent Office web site but a special TIFF viewer must be installed with your browser in order properly work. More information on how to configure your computer to view these patents can be found at TIFF image Viewers for Patent Images.
DATAMP = Directory of American Tool And Machinery Patents . A sister site to VintageMachinery.org with information on patents related to machinery and tools. A much easier user interface than the USPTO's for finding information on machinery patents.

Patent Number Date Title Name City Description
3,004,458 Oct. 17, 1961 Hydraulic powered oscillating shear Joe R. Dvorak Cosmos, MN This is the patent for the well-known Dvorak ironworker. It was apparently manufactured by the Dvorak family for a time, and then in 1966 or '67 the patent rights were acquired by Scotchman Industries, which continues to manufacture several models of hydraulically driven ironworkers. Meanwhile, the Dvorak family came up with improved designs which were manufactured by the Dvorak family which eventually organized as Dynamic Specialties, which became Uni-Hydro Inc.
3,678,792 Jul. 25, 1972 Metal plate shears Frank Dvorak Cosmos, MN "A metal plate shears for cutting large sheets of metal in which four rollers are hydraulically slid between a guide way and four inclined ramps so as to force a cutting blade downward through a large metal plate. A high leverage hydraulic clamp serves to hold the plate in place during the shearing operation. The edge of the lightweight cutting blade is kept straight by a unique truss arrangement mounted on the side of the blade."
This shear was manufactured by the Dvorak family, which eventually organized as Dynamic Specialties, which became Uni-Hydro Inc.
3,899,950 Aug. 19, 1975 Bar shear Jim Dvorak Cosmos, MN "A bar shear is provided including a pair of side plates and an intermediate moveable plate. The moveable plate includes a circular aperture accommodating a disc. A shaft means offset from the center of the disc causes movement of the moveable plate as the discs are rotated about the offset shaft means. Cooperable notches are provided in the side plates and moveable plate. Upon movement of the moveable plate, a bar or strip of metal or the like is sheared off by the moveable plate."
This shear was manufactured by the Dvorak family, which eventually organized as Dynamic Specialties, which became Uni-Hydro Inc.
3,945,287 Mar. 23, 1976 Sheet shear Jim Dvorak Cosmos, MN "A metal plate shears for cutting large sheets of metal includes a fixed blade, and a movable blade cooperable therewith. The movable blade is mounted on a plate having a plurality of circular apertures therein. Discs are mounted in these apertures, the discs being eccentrically supported, the axes of the eccentrics being in the same angular relation to and the same angular relation from, the centers of the discs. Arms are secured to the discs, and hydraulic means are provided for rotating the discs about their eccentric axes. Rotation of the discs lowers the plate bearing the movable cutting knife past the fixed knife, shearing off a sheet inserted between the blades."
This shear was manufactured by the Dvorak family, which eventually organized as Dynamic Specialties, which became Uni-Hydro Inc.
4,054,075 Oct. 18, 1977 Shear mechanism Jim Dvorak Cosmos, MN This patent improves on the inventor's previous patent 3,899,950 which "has proved to be highly successful. Even though my patented shear has performed admirably, it still requires a number of moving parts and its cost, while less than most comparable prior art devices, has presented a challenge to provide a shear mechanism that will be even less expensive... Briefly, my invention comprises two upstanding fixed plates having a movable plate sandwiched therebetween. The several plates each have a notch extending inwardly from one edge, one fixed plate having a detachable "
This shear was manufactured by the Dvorak family, which eventually organized as Dynamic Specialties, which became Uni-Hydro Inc.
4,907,481 Mar. 13, 1990 Powered press with manual punch and die alignment capability Charles J. Dvorak Cosmos, MN This invention relates to a die alignment mechanism for the press portion of a combination press and shear, i.e., an ironworker. The shear mechanism is that of patent 4,054,075.
