724,438 Apr. 07, 1903 Steam and Governor Connection for Twin Engines Harry C. Clay Columbus, Bartholomew County, IN Abstract:
My invention relates particularly to a peculiar arrangement of connections between the boiler and the twin engines of a traction-engine, although, of course, not necessarily limited to such use.
In traction-engine construction it is essential that the mechanism be as compactly arranged as possible, especially in the matter of width of the machine. It is therefore customary to place the engine on the top of the horizontal boiler, and if two engines are used they are mounted side by side upon the top of the boiler.
Heretofore considerable difficulty has been experienced in so arranging the steam connections and the throttling -governor that each cylinder will obtain the same quantity of steam, and difficulty has also been experienced in so arranging the oil-cup as to equally distribute the oil to the two cylinders.
The object of my present invention is therefore to so arrange and group the steam connections, the throttling-governor, the oil-cup, and the driving connections between the governor and crankshaft as to insure an equal distribution of steam and oil to each cylinder and without increasing the width of the machine.

741,042 Oct. 13, 1903 Quick Release Belt Tightener John N. Kailor Columbus, Bartholomew County, IN Abstract:

Quick Release Belt Tightener Harry C. Clay Columbus, Bartholomew County, IN
764,658 Jul. 12, 1904 Spark Arresting Smoke Stack Harry C. Clay Columbus, Bartholomew County, IN Abstract:
In the applications of smoke-stacks to traction-engines it has been customary heretofore to arrange an inverted conical screen in the upper end of the stack, means being provided by which the screen could be lifted a short distance out of the stack, so as to thus leave a freer opening for the smoke when there are no sparks therein. The arrangement of the screen within the stack has been necessary, because if the screen is arranged outside the height of the stack is so materially increased that difficulty is experienced in going under trees along the road and through covered bridges and the like. With the screen inverted and entirely within the stack the draft is cut down to a very considerable extent and difficulty is experienced in burning light fuel such as straw, wood, &c. And for this reason, operators are inclined to lift the screen out of the stack, and thus run the risk of fire.
Claim:
The combination, with a smoke-stack, of a spark-arresting screen having a closed end adapted to be inserted into the upper end of the stack, one end of said screen being provided with means whereby the screen maybe arranged upon the stack with its closed end either up or down.
795,269 Jul. 25, 1905 Belt Guide Harry C. Clay Columbus, Bartholomew County, IN Abstract:
In the operation of threshing and other similar machines it is common to drive the machine by means of an endless belt of considerable length and an engine set some distance from the machine. Difficulty is experienced in getting the driving-pulley of the engine in exact alignment with the driven pulley of the machine, and it is necessary to provide some means for properly guiding the driving-belt in order to compensate for the lack of accurate alinement for the two pulleys.
Claim:
A belt-guide consisting of a suitable standard, an idler-carriage Journaled thereon, an idler journaled on said carriage, a pair of guide-rollers carried by said carriage to one side of the idler, the axis of the journaled connection between the carriage and standard passing to one side of the axis of the idler and intersecting the plane of the axes of the guide-rollers substantially in the plane of the belt, and means for holding the idler-carriage in various positions of angular adjustment on the standard.

812,784 Feb. 13, 1906 Band Cutter Henry C. Clay Columbus, Bartholomew County, IN Abstract:
In a band cutter and feeder construction several knives are attached to a rotating shaft; but heretofore with but few exceptions the knives have been perforated and slipped endwise over the carrying shaft being spaced apart by suitable intermediate thimbles. In such construction difficulty is experienced in removing the knives for sharpening, as it is necessary to withdraw the entire shaft from its bearing. In such an arrangement there is also difficulty in returning the several parts to initial position, so as to insure balancing of the structure.
Claim:
The combination, with a shaft and spacing-sleeves carried thereby, of a boss carried by one of said sleeves and extending axially into a socket formed in the adjacent sleeve, the said boss having one transverse dimension of less magnitude than a parallel dimension at greater distance from the axis, a knife having an open notch formed in one edge thereof and fitting said boss, the said open socket being of less width at its open end than the width farther in, whereby the knife when applied to the boss may not be transversely withdrawn, and means for clamping the sleeves together upon the knife.
812,823 Feb. 20, 1906 Sawmill Feed Drive Henry C. Clay Columbus, Bartholomew County, IN Abstract:

The object of my invention is to provide a simple mechanism for accomplishing this driving movement, said mechanism consisting of a minimum number of parts and the arrangement being such that the driving action will tend to maintain the parts in either the forward or reverse driving engagement as soon as driving engagement has been established.

904,407 Nov. 17, 1908 Steering Gear Harry C. Clay Columbus, Bartholomew County, IN Abstract:
It has heretofore been customary, in traction engines, to provide rubbing blocks, which are mounted on the shell of the boiler, to prevent the steering wheels from being swung around too far. Such a construction, under some circumstances, results in a bad buckling of the boiler sheets and the object of my present invention is to provide a structure wherein the steering gear itself is provided with members adapted to engage the steering wheels when they are swung around far enough, and prevent their coming into engagement with the boiler shell.

969,746 Sep. 06, 1910 Boiler Harry C. Clay Columbus, Bartholomew County, IN Abstract:
In the manufacture of traction engines many portions, like the king-post, the engine, etc. must be attached to the boiler shell and it has heretofore been customary to provide the boiler shell with threaded openings into which threaded clamping bolts are passed, said clamping bolts passing through castings forming part of the members mentioned. with such a construction it is difficult, after a time, to maintain steam tight joints, and recently the Canadian Government has passed an act condemning such construction unless reinforcing plates be arranged inside of the boiler shell at the points of attachment. Such a reinforcement is objectionable for many reasons, and the object of my present invention is to produce a construction by means of which castings, such as the king-post, journal bearings, engine, etc. may be attached to the boiler shell by removable bolts in such manner that a perfectly steam tight boiler shell may be maintained and in such manner that the expansion and contraction of the shell will not injuriously affect the said connections.
