From the 1889 book "The Industries of the Bay Cities"

This company was active in the mid-1880s (and possibly before), and made circular ripsaws. In the late 1880s the business was acquired by Michael Garland and consolidated with his mill supply business, the resulting firm operating as M. Garland Co. The machinery manufactory operated as the Standard Machinery Works but that name seems not to have been used in advertising.

Information Sources

  • This company is known from patent records. Based on the patents, they made an early self-feeding circular ripsaw.
  • An 1885-10-20 patent to Michael Garland was assigned to this firm. An 1886-01-05 patent to the same inventor was not. Both patents were for circular ripsaws. A separate 1886-01-05 patent for a circular ripsaw was granted to Charles A. Merrill of Bay City and assigned to Mssrs. Merrill and Garland.
  • Ad in 1887-88 Polk's Michigan State Directory. The principals were M. Garland (president), Lane Lyle (vice president), and A. D. Catlin (secretary and treasurer).
  • The Publication tab has a copy of an article from the 1889 book, The Industries of the Bay Cities that explains the Michael Garland acquisition of Standard Machinery.
