2,301,525 Nov. 10, 1942 Milling Machine Frank W. Curtis Springfield, Hampden County, MA The original application was divided and a second patent was issued, #2,338,624.
Abstract:
This invention relates primarily to improvements in milling machines, although in certain aspects these improvements may have a wider range of use.
One object of the invention is to improve the arrangement of gearing contained in the knee of a milling machine for driving the various table rates. In particular the invention is concerned with improvements in the manner in which the feed and rapid traverse drives are obtained from a single power drive shaft; in the arrangement of gearing whereby the weight distribution in and the consequent stability of the knee are improved; in the simplification of the distributing gearing for driving the table, saddle, and knee either forward or reverse at the selected rate, and in the arrangement of the gearing to facilitate a unitary control of the change gear mechanism. A further object is to improve the gear shifting control by which the feed rate is determined so that only a single handle need be moved to select the desired rate. A further object is to improve the knee structure so as to give improved stability and guidance to the elevating mechanism and so that the elevating mechanism itself will contribute to the stability of the knee. A further object is to improve the manner of mounting the shaft bearings in the knee to simplify their manufacture and increase their accessibility. A further object is to improve the table operating mechanism.
Claim:
In a machine tool having a bed, a knee vertically movable on the bed, a saddle transversely movable on the knee, a table longitudinally movable on the saddle, and a tool mounted for operation upon work carried by the table; mechanism for moving the knee, saddle, and table sleeve, speed changing mechanism within the knee laterally disposed with respect to said shaft and connecting the main drive with the sleeve, drive shafts for the knee, saddle and table each running from the front of the kneerearwardly, reversing clutch mechanism for each of said drive shafts each including a forward and a reverse gear and being positioned near the front of the knee, and distributing gearing positioned near the front of the knee and connecting the common drive shaft with said reversing clutches.

2,309,241 Jan. 26, 1943 Dividing Head Frank W. Curtis Springfield, Hampden County, MA Claim:
In a dividing head, a body, a spindle mounted in the body for rotation about a longitudinal axis, trunnions on the body having a common axis transverse to the longitudinal axis, a base, saddles on the base one for each trunnion and having a semicircular bearing surface for the trunnions, cap members one for each saddle and having semicircular bearing surfaces complementary to the bearing surfaces of the saddles, means to draw each cap and saddle member toward each other to lock the trunnion against rotation Comprising at abutting surfaces formed, at one end of each saddle and cap, means to hold said surfaces together, flat abutting surfaces on he opposite end of said cap and saddle, the last mentioned abutting surface on the saddle comprising a fiat step formed near the outer edge of he saddle and supporting the flat abutting surface of the cap at its outer edge, a relieved portion extending from the step inwardly to the saddle bearing surface, and means located between said step and inner bearing surface for adjustment to draw said cap and saddle towards each other.

2,338,624 Jan. 04, 1944 Elevating Mechanism for Machine Tool Knees Frank W. Curtis Springfield, Hampden County, MA Original application 08 Mar 1940, now patent #2,301,525, dated 10 Nov 1942. Divided and this application 27 Nov 1940.
This patented elevating mechanism is similar to that used on the Van Norman Models 26, 36, 28, and 38.
Abstract:
One object of the invention is to improve the knee structure so 'as to give improved stability and guidance to the elevating mechanism and so that the elevating mechanism itself will contribute to the stability of the knee. A further object is to improve the drive and stability of operation of the knee to the end that smooth operation and freedom from chatter will be present even when the elevating mechanism is driven at a rapid traverse rate. A further object is to provide a construction of knee elevating mechanism in which the telescopic parts extending between the vertically movable knee and base will have a maximum protection against dirt and metal chips. A further object is to provide a construction which will prevent leakage of oil from the interior of the knee when, as is preferable, the knee acts as an oil reservoir for the gearing contained in it.
Claim:
A knee structure for milling machines and the like comprising a frame, a hollow knee vertically movable on the frame, a vertical splined shaft journaled for rotation upon the frame and having a free end extending upwardly into the knee, a gear splined to the shaft, distributing gearing within the knee coupled to said gear, and a tubular member having a closed upper end and secured to said gear in position to completely enclose that part of the splined shaft above the gear and within the hollow knee to form an oil seal, said closed upper end being remote from the gear a distance substantially corresponding to the maximum vertical travel of the knee.
