Patent Number Date Title Name City Description
53,092 Mar. 06, 1866 Improved composition to be used as a cement and as a plastic material for molding various articles Stanislas Sorel , France This method of producing composition products was used by the Union Stone Co. to produce emery wheels, hones, etc., plus artificial soapstone for making various decorative items. See also patent 100,944.
100,944 Mar. 15, 1870 Improvement in the manufacture of cement for artificial stone Stanislas Sorrel , France This is an improvement on patent 53,092. The improvement is a method of using magnesite rather than the previously-used manufactured magnesia that was derived from magnesian limestone or dolomite. "Large deposits of magnesia have been recently discovered in the United States, both east and west, and it can be used in many places with economy for my purposes."
100,945 Mar. 15, 1870 Improvement in the manufacture of artificial stone Stanislas Sorrel , France This is an improvement on patent 53,092.
102,218 Apr. 26, 1870 Improvement in oil-stone holders Homer Brown Hamilton, IL "This invention relates to improvements in holders for oil-stones; and consists of a pair of cast-metal plates, with pointed feet to use on the bench so as not to slip, arranged to clamp the ends of the stone at the top, and provided with a clamping-rod and screw between the top and bottom, and a brace below the rod, to cause the clamping force on the ends of the stone when the plates are secured up to the ends of the stone and the brace by the rod and its nut. The said plates are provided with flanges for the bottom of the stone to rest on, and sockets for confining the ends of the brace..."
An example is reported, with the only marking being "PATENTED APRIL 26 1870" cast into one end.

110,102 Dec. 13, 1870 Improvement in the manufacture of emery-wheels John F. Wood Boston, MA "The process of manufacturing emery-wheels under this invention is as follows: I take the ordinary composition for emery-wheels as prepared and mixed ready for the mold. I place in the center of the mold a wooden disk, filling all the mold, except so much of the circumference as is designed to be of emery-stone. Into the space thus left the emery composition is pressed, rammed, or tamped in the ordinary way. The wooden disk is then removed, and, before the composition sets, the center space is filled with composition for artificial stone, prepared in the ordinary way, and this is pressed, rammed, or tamped, and the whole is allowed to set and harden, and thus a solid wheel is formed.
"I am aware the centers of iron have been used in emery-wheels; but they are more expensive than those of artificial stone, and cannot be made to unite so perfectly as the artificial stone and emery in my process.
"The danger of throwing off the circumference of large wheels at great velocity requires that the whole be firmly cemented in one mass, which is hardly practicable with an iron center, but is easy by my process; and, again, the danger of fracture of the wheels by the unequal expansion of iron and emery-stone by heat is avoided by this invention."
