In 1889, Edwin R. Fellows, at the urging of James Hartness, became an employee of Jones & Lamson. In a short time this mechanical genius had invented a revolutionary new machine called a gear shaper. With the encouragement and financial backing of Hartness, Fellows Gear Shaper was founded in 1896. In 1903, Fellows adapted its gear shaper for the cutting of helical gears to meet the growing demands of the auto industry. While the 1920's were a time of growth and product development, the early 1940's saw the design and production of nine new kinds of machines. In 1947, Fellows unveiled a mammoth rotary gear shaper, and in 1977 introduced its new series of Hydrostroke machines - the only machines of their type on the market - and in the early 1980's CNC machines were introduced.
