The patent covers the design of the bed-slats and the driving-wheels for the bed. The 1897 Cowan & Co. catalog has a "12 in. patent revolving bed moulder" bearing this patent date. Although Cowan Co. was a rival to Cant, Gourlay & Co., this patent is the only remotely likely candidate matching the patent date (there were several Canadian patent issued on the same date but no other patent from that date is applicable to a moulder).

"...the object of the invention is, first, to provide a simple and rapid means whereby what is known as the 'Richardson' cutter may be attached to and readily detached from the matching heads and the ends of spindles, and, secondly, to provide an extremely simple means of fastening the cutters on the matching head..." This cutter head is seen in a ca. 1900 catalog from Cowan & Co., where it is described as "The Cowan Patent Matching Heads, with the Richardson Patent Cutters". The Richardson cutter patent is 60,787.

This mechanism allows the planer feed rolls for momentary variations in relative speed in order to accommodate the rollers moving as lumber thickness varies, as when feeding different-thickness boards front-to-back through the planer. According to the 1909-07-15 issue of Canada Lumberman and Woodworker, "Mr. Baird has sold the Canadian rights in the invention to Messrs. Cowan & Company of Galt, who are now applying it to their line of moulders..."
