Planing and grooving machine
|
John R. Thomas |
Springfield, OH |
"This invention relates to improvement in that class of wood-planing machines in which the tables are adjustable by means of handwheels and screws; and the object of the invention is to provide a novel construction of devices for adjusting the bearings of the cutter-head, for adjusting the tables simultaneously together or independently of each other, and to adjust the table more rapidly in a horizontal direction than in a vertical direction." This machine was featured in an article in an 1884 issue of "Manufacturer & Builder". The machine was a "universal wood-worker", which is what we now call a jointer but with the ability to act as a molder, ripsaw, crosscut saw, borer, and router. In 1883 this machine "took the medal at the Cincinnati Industrial Exposition over all competitors." The article notes that the company had just changed names from "Cordesman & Egan Co." (sic) to simply The Egan Co. |

Gluing and staining machine
|
William Rabbe |
Cincinnati, OH |
"One of the objects of my invention is to provide a machine which will glue simultaneously either or both sides of the stick for veneering. Another object of my invention is to provide a detachable frame carrying a glue-fount and devices for spreading glue upon the upper side of the stuff by the glue-transferring roller, which attachment can be removed to glue upon one side only. Another object of my invention is to construct a machine so that it can be readily used for graining and staining timber, as well as for gluing the same. The making of imitation grain is accomplished by substituting a graining roller for a smooth-feeding roller." This machine was seen in an Egan Co. catalog. |
