It is the object of this invention to provide a transmission and reversing gearing particularly for use in traction engines, which is at once simple and inexpensive, which is safeguarded against improper operation, and which is always capable of proper operation. To this end I have provided a driving gear and a driven gear, one of which is movable axially into and out of mesh with the other, and a third gear which may be moved transversely of its axis into mesh with the first two gears only when the latter are not in mesh with each other, the third gear being mounted so that it begins to mesh with the driving gear before it begins to mesh with the driven gear, but gets into full meshing engagement with said two gears at substantially the same time.
Claim:
A transmission and reversing gearing comprising the combination of a driving gear and a driven gear one of which is movable transversely of its axis into and out of mesh with the first two gears, and means movable with the axially movable gear for preventing the third gear from being moved into mesh with said first two gears when the latter are in engagement with each other.

This invention relates to power steering- gears for traction engines such as described in my patent for same No. 797,557, dated Aug. 22, 1905.
The object of this invention is to improve the working of said device by providing means for frictionally engaging the disk member when said member is not in an operative position, that is, when not in engagement with the peripheral surface of an engine-pulley.
Claim:
A power steering-gear attachment for traction engines consisting of a main bracket adapted to be suitably connected to a traction engine, a disk-bracket pivotally mounted on the main bracket, a friction-disk journaled in said disk bracket and provided with a friction face, a plunger carried by the disk-bracket and adapted to be brought into frictional contact with said disk, and a driving connection between said disk and the steering means of a traction engine.

This invention relates to improvements in scarifying attachments such as are applied to road engines or power road rollers and are used in tearing up old roads by means of teeth which are forced into and through the surface of the road for leveling and subsequent repair of the same.
Claim:
The combination with a road engine of a scarifying attachment therefor comprising a toothed member suspended transversely beneath the rear of said engine, draw bars secured to said toothed member and pivotally connected to said engine, a spring for raising said toothed member and its suspending means connections between said spring and said toothed member affording a decreasing leverage for the spring as the latter stretched in lowering the toothed member onto the ground, and fluid pressure operated means for holding said toothed member on the ground in opposition to the action of said spring.

This invention relates to frictional clutches and more particularly to those adapted for heavy service such as farm machinery operated by gas engines. Machinery of this and analogous types which is produced at comparatively low cost is in consequence somewhat rough and heavy but primarily it must be strong and durable as it is subjected during usage to heavy strains and while being transported about is exposed to all weather conditions.
Claim:
A clutch comprising a drive member, a driven member, an expanding friction shoe rotatable with one of said' members, said, shoe consisting of a unitary piece formed to provide a hub, a web projecting radially therefrom, and a pair of arcuate arms integral with and extending in opposite directions from said web and adapted by reason of their resiliency to be expanded into frictional engagement with the other clutch member, the opposite ends of said arms being provided with opposed converging faces, a member slidable axially of and rotatable with said friction shoe, a pair of jaws pivotally mounted on said member and having their free ends disposed between the opposed ends of said arms, adjustable means connecting the free ends of said jaws whereby the distance between the jaws may be regulated, and means for moving said jaw-carrying member axially of the clutch to expand the arms of said friction shoe.

This invention relates to baling presses for baling hay, straw and the like and its primary object is to provide a baler of large baling capacity which will be comparatively light in construction but amply strong and durable for the heaviest service requirements and of such simple construction as to be capable of production at a low cost.
Claim:
In a baling press, the combination with a baling chamber, compressing plunger and feed head, of a rotatable driving element, an eccentric connection between the driving element and compressing plunger whereby the latter is directly reciprocated by rotative movement of said element, a revolving annular cam, and a connection operated from said cam by means of which the feed head is moved into and out of the baling chamber independently of the movement imparted to the compressing plunger, thereby enabling the operating movement of the feed head to be timed independently of the reciprocal movement imparted to the compressing plunger through said eccentric connection.

1,357,275 Nov. 02, 1920 Separator Harry C. Clay Columbus, Bartholomew County, IN Abstract:
Grain separators, as they are now culstomarily built, comprise various mechanisms rearwardly of the threshing cylinder for separating the grain from the chaff and straw. These mechanisms include revolving beaters, reciprocating straw racks, shaking fingers and various devices, all designed to thoroughly shake out and separate the kernels of grain. A s the inevitable result of these various mechanisms the separators are unduly long from end to end, making them very expensive to manufacture and also very cumbersome to ship and inconvenient to transport from place to place in use.
Claim:
In a separator, the combination of a separator frame having side walls provided with laterally aligned circular openings; a stationary cylindrical drum of the character described, the ends of which project into and are seated in said openings in the side walls, the drum having an opening through which a blast of air may be delivered, a traveling carrier movable about the drum for delivering material into the path of said blast of air, and means beyond the periphery of the drum and independent thereof for revolubly supporting the carrier.

The reversing gear disclosed herein is of that type which insures that the amount of lead shall be uniform for all points of cut-off in either direction of motion so. that the points of cut-off within the working range will bear the same relation to the stroke of the piston at both ends irrespective of whether the crank shaft is being driven by the piston over or under; Such a valve gear mechanism is disclosed in my prior Patent No. 673,859, granted May 14, 1901, and my present invention pertains more particularly to the means by which the valve gear mechanism is actuated and controlled and by which the speed of the engine is also regulated and controlled through the throttle valve.
One of the primary objects of this invention is the provision of simple and efficient means by which the speed of the engine, its direction of travel and the point of cut-off may all be regulated and controlled to a line degree of nicety from a single controlling lever so that the operator may at all times have the engine under perfect control and may quickly and easily change thew-peed, direction of travel or point oi cut-oil with one hand by the manipulating the single controlling lever.
