The Friend Mfg. Co. was founded in 1895 by Warren H. Hull and his brothers, John C. and G. Albert to make bicycles and then automobiles. They then started manufacturing agricultural spraying apparatus around 1900. They designed and built 2½ to 6 horsepower horizontal air-cooled gas engines to power the sprayers. By 1907 they had introduced a water-cooled model also. The last spray rig with a Friend engine was built around 1939.
