This patent is noted in an unrelated later Armstrong wrench patent (no. 335,986).
298,043 May. 06, 1884 Wrench Nathaniel W. Vandegrift Bridgeport, CT This patent was used by the Armstrong Mfg. Co. of Bridgeport, CT for their screw-adjust pipe wrench. The wrench also draws upon Armstrong & Vandegrift's patent No. 392,300 granted November 6, 1888.

335,986 Feb. 09, 1886 Wrench Frank Armstrong Bridgeport, CT A thumb lever at the base of the movable jaw lifts a toothed clamping block inside the jaw. The teeth engage fine teeth on the face of the main bar. Contrast this construction to "Atwater's Tiger" (patent no. 284,162) where the jaw is held by the cam action of an eccentric disk.
The specifications note Armstrong's previous patent (no. 274,544).
The British equivalent patent 188601870 was registered Febr. 9, 1886.
Although no examples are known, the design appears in a 1903 Armstrong Mfg. Co. advertisement.

337,627 Mar. 09, 1886 Pipe Wrench Attachment For Monkey Wrenches Frederick H. Seymour Detroit, MI A chain-wrench pipe gripping add-on. The wrench shown in the drawing is the F.H. Seymour Feb. 27, 1883 patent (no. 273,170).
Armstrong's Dec. 23, 1886 IRON AGE announcement shows the attachment on a "Coes" type wrench.
