This firm was apparently established sometime after 1891 by Fred R. Patch, George T. Chaffee, and Newman K. Chaffee. They made both metal-working and stone-working machinery, although the stone side came to dominate in later years. They also made steam engines.

  • A 1993 issue of Rutland Historical Society Quarterly, available in Snippet View through Google Bookshas the following:
In 1891 Fred Patch, in partnership with George T. Chaffee and Newman K. Chaffee, ... resulting fire was so intense that only extraordinary efforts kept the Patch plant from being destroyed, too. Following the disaster, Harris approached Patch and the Chaffees and suggested forming a stock company to take over his property. This was done, and the new company came to be known as the F. R. Patch Manufacturing Co. Two new brick buildings were constructed as well as a brick office building and malting room.
