USPTO = U.S. Patent Office . Images of the actual patent can be viewed on the U.S. Patent Office web site but a special TIFF viewer must be installed with your browser in order properly work. More information on how to configure your computer to view these patents can be found at TIFF image Viewers for Patent Images.
DATAMP = Directory of American Tool And Machinery Patents . A sister site to VintageMachinery.org with information on patents related to machinery and tools. A much easier user interface than the USPTO's for finding information on machinery patents.

Patent Number Date Title Name City Description
161,444 Mar. 30, 1875 Improvement in wood-planing machines Josiah Ross Buffalo, NY There are two innovations. One is to attach the matcher-head frames to the adjustable table so that the matcher heads move when the stock thickness is adjusted. The other is to attach the feed-roller gearing frame to the feed-roller box, so that the gearing does not have to be adjusted when the feed-rollers are adjusted.
This patent was used on Josiah Ross' No. 4 'Monitor' planer-matcher. We have seen this patent date on a planer being sold by George Parr of Buffalo. Parr was also a machinery manufacturer but in this case we believe he was reselling a planer made by Josiah Ross.

"This invention relates more especially to that class of wood-planing machines which are provided with a transverse rotary cutter-head or cylinder carrying the knives or cutters.
"Heretofore a driving-pulley was mounted upon one of the spindles of the cutter-head, which pulley was connected with a pulley on the main driving-shaft by an endless belt. This construction is objectionable, as the spindle carrying the pulley is subjected to great strain, which tends to spring or deflect the spindle and produces considerable friction, thereby requiring the spindles of the cutter-head to be mounted somewhat loosely in there bearings to avoid excessive heating of the latter. This loose arrangement of the spindles allows the cutter-head to quiver and run irregularly, thereby producing a rough, uneven surface on the board. The joint of the driving belt in passing around the driving pulley jars the latter and increases the tremulous motion of the cutter-head
"The object of my invention is to remedy this difficulty and to connect the cutter-head with the main driving-shaft in such a manner that the irregular motion of the driving-shaft will not be transmitted to the cutter-head."
The means by which this machine achieves the goals is the use of an independent driving-shaft that is joined to one of the spindles by a flexible coupling.
We have seen a "Special Notice from Josiah Ross, dated April 20, 1901. "After this date all machines that usually had on them my Patent Cylinder Driving Device and my Improved Self Adjusting Feed will be built without them, unless specially ordered.
"The cost of manufacturing the machines with these devices on has been such that I have been unable to produce them with any reasonable profit... The least neglect will cause trouble with the Cylinder Driving Device..." We believe that the Cylinder Driving Device refers to the mechanism of this patent.
