This is effected by two spiral springs acting on steel levers which are attached to the upper slide direct, and all the reciprocating parts of this movement being made of steel-plate enables the machine to run at a high rate of speed with great smoothness..."

Under modern conditions of lathe use, in which remarkably heavy cuts are taken with the recently developed high-speed steels, there has developed a tendency for the lathe arbor to spring into a deflection between its bearings. With extra heavy work being done at the face plate, either boring: or turning, the tendency is for the nose of the arbor to spring upwardly and deflect the central portions of the arbor, between its bearings, downwardly. My present invention aims to so stiffen the arbor as to lessen the evil referred to.

927,628 Jul. 13, 1909 Means for securing movable lathe-stocks Charles Duncanson Young Columbus, OH The Canadian equivalent of this patent is 122,545 and is assigned to the Ontario machine tool manufacturer John Bertram & Sons. We don't know if this patent was used by an American manufacturer, nor do we know how the inventor connected with a Canadian machine tool maker. The inventor, Charles Duncanson Young, would later (in the early 1920s) become commanding officer of the US 304th Engineer Regiment. He was recalled to duty sometime before the US joined World War II. In 1942 he was promoted to Brigadier-General. He spent the war working in procurement, distribution and transportation. He was released from active duty in 1945. In 1948 he received a Franklin Institute Award for his work on "Scientific Advancement of Steam Locomotive". He died in 1955 just before his 77th birthday.
