Image Description:
Fig. 246 represents a machine made by George Richards & Co., Ltd., in which, in the example illustrated, the table is capable of vertical adjustment through a distance of 12 in. This table is mounted upon guides machined on the side of the fixed column; and in addition there is provided, at right angles to the adjustable table, a fixed bed-plate, upon which larger work can be set up, thus considerably increasing the range of operation of the machine. Belts are adopted in this machine, in preference to gearing, for driving the spindle, to obtain a smooth motion of the drill, free from jarring, which may readily arise from gearing that is worn. Back gears of a ratio of 6¼ to 1, mounted on the back of the spindle saddle, are employed for reducing the speed to suit boring and other slow-speed operations There are three spindle feeds, stopped and started by means of an internal clutch, and a reversing motion by gears and clutches is also provided.
