Image Description:
Another taper-turning attachment, such as is fitted to the lathes of the Hendey Machine Company, is shown in fig. 47 in position on the bed of the machine. As in the previous arrangement, the taper attachment is carried upon brackets on the back of the carriage and is thus always in position ready for use. All the necessary operations enumerated below can be made from the front of the carriage. The adjustable slide bar is first set to the angle of taper required, and the clamping dog is bound to the back V of the bed, as shown in the illustration. The cross feed screw block is then disengaged by loosening the post screw, shown at the end of the carriage wing; and, finally, the slide-rest link is clamped to the shoe of the adjustable slide by means of the hand lever, shown at the rear of the illustration. With this attachment tapers of 15 degrees included angle, or of about 3 in. in diameter per foot of length, can be formed.
