For relieving or backing off the teeth of taps, cutters, hobs, and other cutting tools there is often used an attachment of the type illustrated in fig. 50, which represents the design fitted by the Hendey Machine Company to certain of their lathes for producing reliefs up to 5/32 in. The tool slide is inter- changeable with the compound or other rests and may be quickly mounted in position on the cross slide. The actuating mechanism is mounted on the top of the gear box, and is driven by spur gearing, which meshes with the stud gear of the head-stock. From the gearbox the drive is transmitted to the tool slide by means of the telescopic and universal-jointed shaft, which permits of the tool being inclined to the work at any angle up to 30 degrees. As each tooth of the work rotates past the cutting edge, the tool is fed inwards automatically by means of a cam, to an extent determined by the setting of the mechanism, and after the passage of the tooth, when the fluted interval is reached, the tool returns sharply in preparation for the next tooth. Upon the number of the teeth to be relieved depends the spindle speed, and when the number is considerable the work must be rotated at a comparatively slow speed. For this reason, a special three-speed counter-shaft arrangement is supplied, the slow speed being provided for use with the relieving attachment. |
