The engraving on this page shows an engine admirably adapted for rolling-mill purposes and is a special construction, embodying in its design all the latest and most valuable features of the modern practice of steam engineering. The main frames are tapering hollow girders, the lower ends of which terminate in a broad flange, finishing flush with the floor line, and bolted to a heavy foundation girder built in the masonry. Between the upper ends of the column is clamped the steam cylinder, the main pillow-block being cast separate, and similarly clamped between the flanges on the lower side of the column. The slides are cast upon the column and provided with removable faces. The automatic crank governor is one of the most powerful and sensitive arrangements ever introduced, means being provided for adjusting the speed when used for rolling-mill work (such as small merchant
iron of various sizes), the range of variation possible without affecting the regulation being, as demonstrated in practice, from 125 to 250 revolutions. Simple disengaging devices are provided, so that the engine may be operated upon a backward motion by hand in case of bars wrapping round the rolls. The valve is of the balanced type, being of the well-known patent of Prof. John E. Sweet, Syracuse, N. Y. All handling of the engine is done from the floor level, a platform being provided for convenience for removing and examining the upper works. This engine is also designed to run at any speed required, and is a favorite for electric lighting and other work where great regularity of speed and economy are desirable, and a large amount of space for the horizontal type of engine not obtainable.
