Fig. 215 illustrates one of the heavy lathes of William Sellers & Co. It is of 36 in. centres, or 72 in. swing. The heads, in common with those of other heavy lathes by this firm, are set over toward the back to bring the strain of cutting within the bed. The latter has three bearing-ways. The headstock is treble-geared, with a ratio of 125 to 1, the double arrangement being 25 to 1. The spindle is of cast iron, 12½ in. diameter, and is driven through the face-plats. The carriage, it will be observed, can be ran past the poppet.- Both carriage and poppet have rapid adjustments by power. The angular feed of the rest is operated by power. There is a swing-frame on the saddle for change-wheels for turning-feeds. Tapers also can be turned by gear combinations on carriage. The turning-feeds are variable from 1/20 in. to 2 in. per turn of spindle. In screw cutting the lathe is not reversed, but the carriage is returned rapidly by power, and a clutch is arranged to ensure starting afresh in the correct position. The poppet has a capped bearing to take an 8½ in. boring-bar. |
